2025 Progress Report on the Climate Plan for Ville de Montréal: from understanding to outreach
In April 2025, Bureau de la transition écologique et de la résilience (BTER) commissioned us to present the 2025 Progress Report on the Climate Plan ahead of the Montreal Climate Summit. With the 2020-2030 Climate Plan halfway through, the BTER wanted to clarify the Plan structure and the underlying message for 2025: achieving the objectives depends not only on the City, but also on the mobilization of private entities and fellow citizens. The goal for Voilà: here was to report on progress and present future actions, while creating an engaging and realistic report.
Transforming text into a visualization to make it more understandable
At first reading, we identified an opportunity to clarify the structure of the Climate Plan by visualizing the first paragraph of the report. Three large arrows follow one another and point towards the ultimate objectives. They show respectively, the actions and projects implemented, their effects on the eight indicators, and the two major commitments made by the City.
2025 Progress Report on the Climate Plan
We used the same arrows to illustrate the progress on the Climate Plan for 2025, separating actions that are ongoing from those that are already completed. This visualization reveals the path that still needs to be done by the entire community in order to meet its commitments. Each of the actions is then detailed later in the report.
GHG emissions profile
By clarifying the role of this chart, we were able to refocus its design in order to highlight the percentage reduction in emissions, an information that was not visible in the original chart. The absence of emissions is indicated by the dotted lines, and the red color emphasizes the data from the current edition. We removed the composition of emissions, as it was distracting in this specific context.
The eight key indicators
Indicators have been defined to measure the progress of the project towards achieving its objectives. They have all been laid out on a single visualization, accompanied by a timeline that provides a quick overview of the progress made to meet the target.
Graphic design that complies with the Climate Plan guidelines
We complied with the graphic guidelines of the Ville de Montréal 2020–2030 Climate Plan to create the 2025 report. The goal was to develop long-term visual benchmarks that would guide toward meeting the 2030 commitments.
